Being a member of the EU afforded all UK drivers the opportunity of unrestricted travel to, from and through other EU member states. With our departure from the EU finalised at the close of 2020 however, this has now changed.
Despite our departure from the EU, British drivers still do not require an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein as long as their license was issued in the UK. If your licence was issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man, or you have a paper driving licence you may need to obtain an IDP to drive in selected EU countries and Norway.
All drivers however need to obtain a motor insurance green card from their insurance provider to drive a UK-registered vehicle in the EU. This will ensure that you have adequate insurance cover to drive overseas.
It’s not hard to obtain a green card and it shouldn’t cost you a penny. You simply contact your insurer to request one.
